Folklore has it that Biksthang is derived from the Monree (Lepcha) word 'bik mon' meaning 'the place where a tiger ate a cow'. The Lhopos (Bhutias) aver that 'biks thang' means 'a place with a wide variety of special stones'. The area was earlier known as Mangbir or 'the place where millet is grown’. Officially, the village is known as Tsochen (Chuchen) meaning 'Big Lake'. Biksthang, at an altitude of about 4100 feet, is a well-known bird watching hot spot.
